The Highway and its Environs

highway risk managementThe impact of the highway network on the many different types of environments through which it passes is well accepted, and a reduction of this impact, particularly in areas where the intrinsic qualities of the landscape have been recognised, is highly desirable. Contrary to much traditional thinking, the highway can become subsidiary rather than dominant, and even beneficial rather than harmful, by reflecting local conditions in terms of materials, verge treatments, geometry etc.

The interdependent relationship between the highway and its surroundings also influences our behaviour as road users. By taking these factors into consideration we are better able to create circumstances to take into account of the errors which result from human behaviours and thereby improve safety.

The development of appropriate treatments for individual highway features which can occur through maintenance as well as improvements can, in many cases, lead to financial savings from a reduction in the asset base.

We can advise on the development of local design standards including using reduction of signing, lining and traffic-related infrastructure, and the introduction of shared space schemes in the urban and rural environment.
